Consul General of Iraq Calls on Speaker Sindh Assembly Syed Awais Qadir Shah

Karachi, Ju4, 2026:

The Consul General of the Republic of Iraq in Karachi, His Excellency Dr. Maher Mjhid Jejan, called on Speaker Provincial Assembly of Sindh, Syed Awais Qadir Shah, at his office today.

The Secretary Provincial Assembly of Sindh, G.M. Umar Farooq, and Director General Media Irfan Ahmed Memon were also present on the occasion.

During the meeting, Speaker Syed Awais Qadir Shah and Consul General Dr. Maher Mjhid Jejan exchanged greetings and extended best wishes on the occasion of Eid-e-Ghadir.

The meeting discussed matters of mutual interest, including bilateral relations, people-to-people contacts, and regional developments.

The Consul General informed that in recent years, air travel between Pakistan and Iraq has witnessed a significant increase, reflecting growing religious, cultural, and people-to-people exchanges between the two countries.

Matters relating to the historical and spiritual significance of prominent Islamic personalities, including Hazrat Sheikh Abdul Qadir Jilani (RA), were also discussed during the meeting.

Speaker Syed Awais Qadir Shah welcomed the resumption of activities of the Iraqi Consulate in Karachi after a considerable period and assured the Consul General of his full cooperation in facilitating engagements and meetings with relevant provincial government departments.

Both dignitaries exchanged views on regional developments, economic challenges, and infrastructure development in their respective countries.

Speaker Syed Awais Qadir Shah stated that instability and conflicts in the Middle East have led to fluctuations in global fuel prices, which have also impacted the economy of Pakistan.

Consul General Dr. Maher Mjhid Jejan also shared the ongoing development projects in Iraq and highlighted the country’s extensive highway network. He also appreciated the natural beauty of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq and compared it with the northern areas of Pakistan.

Speaker Syed Awais Qadir Shah inquired about the law and order situation in Iraq, to which the Consul General responded that the security situation has improved significantly in recent years. 

Consul General also briefed the Speaker on Iraq’s parliamentary system and ongoing progress in the health and education sectors, particularly in Baghdad.

Speaker Syed Awais Qadir Shah expressed his desire to visit Iraq in the near future to perform pilgrimage and to explore the country’s rich religious, cultural, and historical heritage more closely.

Consul General Dr. Maher Mjhid Jejan also highlighted the historical significance of ancient Babylon and presented a portrait reflecting the cultural and historical legacy of Iraq.

At the conclusion of the meeting, Speaker Provincial Assembly of Sindh Syed Awais Qadir Shah presented the Consul General with books on the history of Sindh and the Provincial Assembly of Sindh, a commemorative shield of the Provincial Assembly, a traditional Sindhi Ajrak, and a Sindhi Cap.

Consul General Dr. Maher Mjhid Jejan presented the Speaker with a portrait of the Lion of Babylon, a 2,600-year-old basalt sculpture and a major symbol of Iraq’s ancient civilization and cultural identity.

The Consul General thanked Speaker Syed Awais Qadir Shah for his gracious hospitality, valuable time, and continued cooperation.
